Geolux RSS-2-AB Water Surface Velocity Measurement Kit

Airborne K-band surface-velocity radar for drones — measures river and channel flow speed contactlessly, ten readings per second, at points that are unsafe to reach on foot. Automated by SkyHub and UgCS; works with DJI M350/M300 RTK and Pixhawk drones.

Geolux RSS-2-AB Water Surface Velocity Measurement Kit for Drones

The Geolux RSS-2-AB is an airborne K-band surface-velocity radar that measures the flow speed of a water surface without contact. Operating between 24.075 and 24.175 GHz, it returns flow-speed readings ten times a second over RS-232. Mounted on a drone and automated by SkyHub and UgCS, it measures river and channel flow at precise points that are dangerous or impossible to reach with traditional instruments — no in-water deployment and no fixed infrastructure required.

Measuring a River’s Flow Speed Using a UAV-Borne Water Surface Velocity Radar

Drone carrying the Geolux RSS-2-AB surface velocity radar over a river

Flow velocity from the air, anywhere

The biggest advantage of a UAV-borne velocity radar is access: it measures in hard-to-reach places with no existing infrastructure. The whole survey is automated by the SkyHub onboard computer and UgCS mission planning, so the sensor hovers at a defined point and captures repeatable surface-velocity readings on demand.

Geolux RSS-2-AB surface velocity readings compared with an ADCP reference

Reference-grade data, SkyHub-logged

K-band radar delivers ten flow-speed readings per second, validated against ADCP reference measurements. The kit connects to SkyHub for georeferenced logging and works across drones including the DJI M350/M300 RTK and Pixhawk platforms. It is the airborne version of the proven Geolux RSS-2-3000w, supplied with sensor, mountings, SkyHub cable and logging software.

Applications

Hydrological surveys, environmental monitoring, water-supply engineering projects, accurate discharge monitoring in rivers, and flow monitoring in irrigation channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it measure?

Water surface flow velocity, contactlessly, using a K-band radar operating at 24.075–24.175 GHz. It outputs ten flow-speed readings per second over RS-232.

Why use it on a drone?

A UAV-borne velocity radar can take measurements in hard-to-reach places with no existing infrastructure, automated to hover and measure at a specified point — ideal for discharge monitoring in rivers and irrigation channels.

What do I need to run it?

The SkyHub onboard computer is required to log the data; via SkyHub it works with drones including the DJI M350/M300 RTK and Pixhawk platforms. The kit includes the sensor, mountings, SkyHub cable and logging software.

How does it relate to the Geolux RSS-2-3000w?

The RSS-2-AB is the “airborne” version of the Geolux RSS-2-3000w, packaged for drone surveys with mountings, a SkyHub cable and logging software.
